Maria Lawrence was born in Pickering, Canada before moving to Nauvoo, Illinois in 1840 after the death of her father. In 1837, Maria's family converted to the church and was under the legal guardianship of Joseph Smith after their move to Nauvoo. Both Maria and her sister Sarah were wed to Joseph Smith in 1843. Maria passed away in 1847, three years after the martyrdom of Joseph before the saints traveled out west.
