Don Carlos Smith was born in Norwich, Vermont, in 1816. In June of 1830, he was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints In August of 1830, Don Carlos served a mission in St. Lawrence County, New York. In May 1831, Don Carlos moved to Kirtland and worked at the Kirtland printing shop. He married Agnes Moulton Coolbrith in 1835. In 1836, he was ordained a high priest, was appointed president of the Kirtland high priests quorum, and served another three missions.
